INFORMATION FOR EVENT PARTICIPANTS

Due to covid 19 we cannot meet in person for our annual fundraising event, Deed of Alms. However, you can still participate! All you need is a camera, the internet, and a sword!

This year we will run 4 challenges over the month of June to fundraise for West Neighbourhood House. which supports the community in Toronto. Now, more then ever they need our help. West Neighbourhood house works with the elderly, kids, unhoused folks, people struggling with addiction, newcomers and have been doing an amazing job for many years.

We encourage you to ask your friends to sponsor you, (or you can sponsor yourself at the donate link above) but we know times are tight so you can participate either way. Just post the link and tell your friends a little about what you are doing, invite them to the Facebook page and post this donation link.

We will post example submissions at the beginning of each challenge week.

You can participate in all or some of the challenges. You can submit any time in the week leading up to the deadline, but late submissions will not be accepted.

Your submissions can be posted on our Deed of Alms Facebook group, where they will be looked over by a moderator and then posted publicly on the page.

First challenge, Due June 13th

Film yourself doing both halves of a play from a manual. If you have a partner you can work with, do the play with them. Make sure to add an image or description of the play you are doing.

Second Challenge, Due June 20th

Take a video of yourself doing some sort of sharps cutting. No need to get fancy, if you don’t have a sharp sword, you can cut with a kitchen knife. If you don’t have tatami, we recommend cutting vegetables like rutabega or cellery root, squash is also good. Have fun with it and be safe! You can also cut vegetables with a regular dull practice sword if you get the angle right. So you can experiment with that too.

Third challenge, Due June 27th

Take a video of yourself doing a form or asaulto. If you don’t have one already memorized, we recommend the IAS form. Your have three weeks to prepare this challenge so practice, practice practice!

Fourth challenge, Due July 4th

Take a video of yourself doing 10 thrusts to a 2 inch by 2 inch target. You can use a hanging nerf ball on a chain, or tape a target to a telephone pole or brick wall. Show us that precision targeting!

BONUS CHALLENGES Due July 4th.

Run a kilometer in your armour.

OR

Film yourself doing 15 minutes of continuouss, elegant pell-work.

Stay safe, and happy swording!
