Join us for Hoplologia’s Annual General Assembly, which will be held in Canada's national capital region (Gatineau-Ottawa).

Workshops, presentations, discussions, martial training and wine are to be had at this year’s event! It will be a great opportunity to learn and to share your experience and knowledge.

You can also take some time before, during and after the weekend to visit the national capital’s beautiful, cold and snowy area. There is plenty to see and do, including skating on the world's largest skating rink and Winterlude!

This event is open to members and non-members alike. This is good time to meet us if you are considering joining us!

Some Class Descriptions

  • Let's dance! by Julie Plante Dances from 12th to 15th century French and Italian repertoire. The objective is to learn and test them… Tresque, Carole, Saltarello and Bransle on such songs as Non Sofre, A l’entrada del tens clar, Ungaresca and Bransle d’Écosse. Two by two or in group.

  • Lignitzer's Sword and Buckler by Craig Shackleton. In this workshop, Craig Shackleton will present an overview of Lignitzer’s lessons for Sword and Buckler. We will then explore how these techniques fit into the wider body of Liechtenauer’s Kunst des Fechtens, as well as the connections to the Walpurgis fechtbuch. We will finish with some exercises you can take with you to help develop effective use of sword and buckler and to adapt whatever sword tradition you already study to use of sword and buckler. This will be a hands-on practical lesson. A few extra bucklers will be made available for those who don’t own one. Fencing masks (or similar) and swords are required to participate.

  • Jack the Axe by Jason Smith A look at knighthood and deeds of arms as seen through the various chronicles of Jacques de Lalaing's deeds.

  • Refining your practice of Armizare by Christian G. Cameron:  Tailor your practice to your own style and your own fight. Develop a set of doctrines that represent how you will fight. You will need a longsword, fencing mask and gloves

  • The Most Beautiful Books in the World: The Book of Hours in the Middle Ages by Elisabeth Beattie: The Book of Hours is sometimes called "a medieval bestseller". It was one of the most popular books produced in the Middle Ages, and thousands of them survive - some luxury productions each representing hundreds of hours of work by skilled scribes and illuminators, some printed cheaply by the hundred. Who owned them? How were they used? And what can they tell us about the lives of the people who used them?
